Junior Caminero has arrived-What to expect?

There's a moment with certain players where you stop waiting for them to figure it out and start realizing they already have. Junior Caminero is getting close to that moment.

The kid came into the league with more hype than any Rays prospect in recent memory. Signed out of the Dominican Republic at 16, he was tearing up the minors before most guys his age were worrying about getting drafted. By the time Tampa called him up, people were expecting something special. That's a lot of weight to carry when you're barely old enough to rent a car.

The Pedigree Is Real

Caminero was a consensus top-10 prospect across every major outlet before he got his shot. The scouting reports said to expect— plus raw power and an advanced feel for hitting.

He showed flashes right away. The power was never in question. When Caminero connects,the ball jumps off of his bat.

What scouts worried about — and what's been the real development story — is the strikeout rate and the consistency against quality breaking balls. That's not a knock. That's literally every young hitter's journey. The ones who figure it out become stars. The ones who don't wash out. Caminero is figuring it out.

The biggest thing separating where Caminero was a year ago from where he is now is the at-bat quality. He's taking mor epitches and chasing less.

That matters for fantasy, obviously. Power without contact rates is a roller coaster you don't want to ride in your league. But when a guy with his raw power starts locking in the hit tool, the counting stats start to follow. That's where Caminero is trending. Look at this past week, a .500 avg with 7 HR. That is truly ridiculous and shows his insane upside.

He's not going to be perfect. He's still young. There will be cold stretches and games where the strikeouts pile up. But the overall arc is pointed the right direction, and that's what you want to see from a player with his ceiling.

The Face of a New Era

The Rays have always been about the system. The process. The next guy up. But every generation of a franchise needs a face, a player fans actually attach to. Caminero has that quality. He plays with energy. He's charismatic without being a distraction. And unlike a lot of Rays players who come up and get traded the second they hit arbitration, there's been real noise that Tampa views him differently.

That makes sense. You don't build a fanbase by constantly flipping your best players before they hit their prime. At some point you need a guy to plant your flag in. Caminero looks like that guy. In fantasy terms, this is the window. Get him before the price gets too high. If — and it's looking more like when — everything clicks, you're going to be paying a massive premium to acquire him in trades. I'm talking about 40-50 HR's with a .280-.290 average. The dynasty and keeper value is obvious. But even in redraft leagues, the upside here is worth chasing.
